«God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.» Psalm 46: 1
In ancient times, people built fortresses to protect themselves. These fortresses were like castles with high walls, where people felt safe from enemy attacks. Today, we have our homes to protect us physically, but for our emotional and spiritual safety, we have something even more powerful: God as our refuge!
In Psalm 46, the Bible tells us that, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” This means that when we are scared or facing problems, we can trust in God. It is like a safe fortress where we can hide, and find peace and protection.
God protects us like a fortress protects the people inside. He gives us strength and courage to face any challenge: “Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea […]. Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us.”
Take Action
Build a “fortress” using cardboard boxes. Decorate it and create a flag to place on top. As you build, think about how God is your refuge and strength in life, offering protection and security at all times. Remember that the “fortresses” we create, like this cardboard one, are fragile; but God is our refuge: He never fails, and is always ready to protect us.
