«Babylon is fallen, is fallen! And all the carved images of her gods He has broken to the ground.» Isaiah 21:9
The history of Babylon, one of the greatest cities of antiquity, teaches us that we can truly trust in the fulfillment of divine promises. In today’s text, we find the prophecy of the fall of this great city: “‘And look, here comes a chariot of men with a pair of horsemen!’ Then he answered and said, ‘Babylon is fallen, is fallen! And all the carved images of her gods He has broken to the ground.’”
Babylon was known for its wealth, its hanging gardens (considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world), and for its immense power. But not only that! Babylon has always been a symbol for a people who are enemies of God’s people. So much so that this same fall is also prophesied in Revelation 14! This teaches us an important lesson: no power contrary to God lasts forever.
Their fall shows that God is in control and that, in the end, good always prevails. When we read about the fall of Babylon, we understand that even if we face great challenges and sometimes feel surrounded by difficult situations, we can have hope. Babylon has already fallen once, and according to the prophecies, it will fall again, which assures us that we can trust God to guide and protect us, even in the midst of this Babylon!
