«For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, Line upon line, line upon line, Here a little, there a little.”» Isaiah 28:10
Studying the Bible can be like putting together a big jigsaw puzzle. You start with scattered pieces, and little by little, you find where each one fits together to form a complete and wonderful picture. Isaiah 28:10 speaks of this with the words: “For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.” This means that, in order to understand the Bible well, we can't rely on just one verse, just as we can't evaluate if a puzzle is beautiful just by looking at a single piece! We need to look at what the Bible says as a whole on a given subject and then form our opinion.
When we want to learn about something, such as Sabbath keeping, Jesus' return, or prophecies, it's not enough to just read a part of the Bible that talks about it. We need to look in different parts, “here a little, there a little,” to get a fuller understanding. In this way, we avoid confusion and better understand what God wants to teach us.
This way of studying helps us build our ideas based on everything the Bible says, not just isolated parts. It's like putting the pieces of the puzzle together to really see the picture God wants to show us.
Take Action
Choose a theme, such as obedience, and try to find different verses in the Bible that talk about it. Write them down in a notebook and see how they connect to form a complete idea of what God says about obedience.
