WHY DID GOD INSTITUTE THE PASSOVER?

«And you shall  observe this thing as an ordinance for you and your sons forever.» Exodus 12:24

The Passover is one of the most significant feasts established by God in the Old Testament, as it has a super important story that God wanted all of His people to remember. Long ago, the people of Israel had been imprisoned in Egypt, and God wanted to set them free. As we saw in yesterday’s devotional, God sent several plagues, and the last of them, the tenth, was the death of the eldest son, that is, the firstborn. To protect oneself from this plague, it would be necessary to kill a little lamb, and spread its blood on the doorposts, so that the angel of death would not “enter” that house, and he would pass right over it. All the Israelites who did this had their children spared.

God wanted everyone to remember that night, so He created the feast of the Passover. It is like a great anniversary of when God saved and delivered His people! Best of all, it all pointed to an even more in-credible deliverance that would happen through the Messiah: Jesus, the Lamb of God, would come and save us all from an even greater danger—sin! At this time of year we have the opportunity to remember this story and celebrate the spiritual deliverance we can all have through the Lamb.

Take Action

We are going to do something special to remember this story. You will need brown cardboard to cut into the shape of the top of a door (the doorposts) and red gouache paint. On Friday, take that paint and dab it on the cardboard with your finger, as if you were doing the same thing the people of Israel did many years ago. Put that cardboard on your bedroom door this weekend to remember God’s great love for us and how Jesus saved us!
