«’For thus says the Lord God: “Indeed I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out.» Ezekiel 34: 11
Today's text brings us a powerful message for both shepherds and sheep, that is, for spiritual leaders and for members of the faith community. God, through the prophet Ezekiel, rebukes the shepherds of Israel who did not take such good care of their sheep. Instead of feeding them, they fed on them; instead of caring for them, they neglected and dispersed the flock. Sad, isn't it?
This text reminds us of the responsibility leaders have to take good care of the people God has entrusted to them. Shepherds are to be loving guides who feed, care for and protect their sheep. They must be attentive to each other's needs, helping them to grow spiritually and stay on the right path.
On the other hand, the message is also for the sheep, the members of the church, who are encouraged to follow and respect their leaders, recognizing the important role they play in their spiritual lives. However, it also reminds us that, above all, our supreme Shepherd is the Lord, who promises to watch over us, seek us out when we are lost and bring us back into the fold.
Take Action
How about writing a letter or card thanking a spiritual leader who has been a good shepherd to you? It could be a pastor, a Sabbath school teacher, or anyone who has guided you spiritually. Tell them how their care and guidance have made a difference in your life. If you are a leader, reflect on how you can be an even better shepherd to your sheep, perhaps by reorganizing your time to be more present or seeking new ways to meet their spiritual needs.
