«Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet Before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord….And he will turn The hearts of the fathers to the children, And the hearts of the children to their fathers, Lest I come and strike the earth with a curse.”» Malachi 4: 5,6
Today we talk about one of the last words and prophecies of the Old Testament, which point to the return of Jesus. This prophecy mentions a prophetic movement, similar to Elijah's ministry, that would prepare the people for this great event.
Elijah was a prophet who lived at a time when many people had forgotten God. They were steeped in idolatry and no longer obeyed God's commandments. But he was not the only one. John the Baptist, in the New Testament (who was also considered a “new Elijah”), lived at a time when people lived in the same way. Both of them were called by God with the mission to lead people to repentance and to worship only the true God. They both had the same lifestyle, dress, food and message.
Today's text is a prophecy that a “third Elijah” would arise before Jesus' return, with a mission similar to the first: to help people prepare, follow the true God and repent of their sins. Did you realize that this is exactly our mission? Today you are the third Elijah. You are in this world with one function: to restore biblical truths! That prophecy is now being fulfilled! We are all the third Elijah! We are called to do the same thing he did! That is Elijah's ministry!
