SALT AND LIGHT

«You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp-stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.» Matthew 5:13-16

Have you ever tried food without salt? It seems like something is missing, doesn’t it? And have you ever noticed how much light makes a difference in darkness? Jesus used these ideas to teach us an important lesson. He said that we, His followers, are like the salt of the earth and the light of the world. But what does it mean?

Being salt means giving flavor to the lives of the people around us. Just as salt enhances the flavor of food, we can make people’s lives more joyful, more meaningful, and fuller of love; in other words, “tastier”. And being a light is like being a small flashlight in a dark room. We can show people the right way, helping them see things in a better way, just like Jesus does. It is interesting to note that Jesus declared Himself to be the light of the world. When we allow His light to shine through us, we will dispel the darkness of this evil world, helping more people to know and follow the path of our Master.

Jesus wants us to be like salt that does not lose its flavor and like a light that shines brightly. This means we must live in a way that shows God’s love and helps others know Jesus.

Take Action

With the help of an adult, prepare a simple dish, such as rice or pasta, but do not add salt. Taste a little and see how it is. Then add a little salt and taste again. You will notice the difference the salt makes! This will help you remember how you can make a difference in people’s lives, being salt and light wherever you go.
