«And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.» John 6: 35
If there is one food that is known and eaten everywhere in the world, it is undoubtedly bread. Bread is a universal food, present in almost every culture. From loaves of bread, brioches, focaccia, Arabic bread to Brazilian cheese bread, it is a basic and essential food. But did you know that Jesus compared Himself to bread? Yes, in John 6, Jesus said, “I am the bread of life.”
This comparison is very interesting. Just as bread nourishes our body and gives us energy to live, Jesus nourishes our soul and spirit. He is the source of spiritual life, and without Him, our spiritual life is empty and meaningless. When Jesus said that He was the bread of life, He meant that, just as we need bread to live physically, we need Him to live spiritually. Just as we eat physical bread every day, we also need to feed on spiritual bread every day.
Jesus also taught that whoever comes to Him will never be hungry, and whoever believes in Him will never be thirsty. This means that He can satisfy all our spiritual needs. When we feel empty, sad or lost, we can go to Jesus, and He will give us comfort, hope and direction. He is everything we need.
Take Action
To better understand what Jesus meant, do an experiment: go a day without eating bread or any substitute for it, such as cookies or cereal. At the end of the day, reflect on how you felt without this staple food. This will help you understand the importance of having Jesus, the bread of life, in your daily life.
