«This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’… Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”»
Acts 4: 11,12
In biblical times, the construction of buildings required a great deal of precision and skill. One of the most important pieces in construction was the cornerstone. This stone was the first thing to be laid in the foundation and determined the alignment of the entire building. If the cornerstone wasn't positioned correctly, the entire structure of the building could be compromised. You see, it was super important!
In Acts 4:11 and 12, Jesus is described as the “cornerstone” that was rejected by the builders. This means that, although Jesus was the most important piece in the plan of salvation, He was rejected by the people who were supposed to receive and accept Him. But despite this rejection, Jesus became the base, the foundation, on which the church is built. Without Him, the church could not exist.
Just as a building needs a strong, well-positioned cornerstone, our spiritual life also needs a solid foundation. Jesus is that foundation. Don't base your faith on your parents or your friends. They are very important in your journey of faith, but first in our life, as our cornerstone, is Jesus! When we build our lives on Him, we are safe and aligned with God's plan. He is the only one who can save us and give us eternal life.
Take Action
To better understand the importance of the cornerstone, try building a small structure using blocks or pieces from a building game. Start with a piece that will be your “cornerstone” and see how it influences the rest of the construction. This will help you to remember that Jesus is the foundation of everything in our lives.
