«“Speak also to the children of Israel, saying: ‘Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am the Lord who sanctifies you.» Exodus 31:13
God gave the people of Israel a very special gift: the Sabbath. He said, “Surely My Sabbaths you shall keep, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations.” This wonderful gift can also be yours and mine. Just as we are happy when school ends and we have a weekend to rest, God wanted people to have a special day in the week to be able to disconnect from the rush of everyday life and connect more with Him.
But, do you know why the Sabbath is so important? It is a day that God chose so that everyone could remember the wonders He has done. Saturday is a day to let go of the worries of school, work and the week; to play, to enjoy family and nature more, to do different things and, most importantly, to think about God and give thanks for all that He does for us. The Sabbath is a reminder of God's love and care, a time to be with our family, friends and church family, celebrating God's blessings, protection and care in our lives.
Take Action
Take a “Sabbath Walk.” Choose a quiet place in nature or a park near your home. During the walk, talk to your family about the things you are thankful for to God. You could also talk about how God took care of you during the week. This walk will be a way to enjoy God's creation, reflect on His blessings and make the Sabbath a special day of connection with God and nature.
