«but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men…. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.» Philippians 2: 7,8
To be humble is not just to think less of yourself, but to think less of yourself and more of others. This is the quality of someone who knows how valuable they are, but doesn't boast about it, choosing to put the needs and wellbeing of others before their own interests. The world would be a much better place if we were humbler, wouldn't it? Humility is one of the most beautiful traits someone can have, because it shows strength, not weakness.
In Philippians 2:5 to 11, we find the greatest example of humility of all time: Jesus Christ. Even though He was God, even though He had all the glory and majesty, He didn't use His position to exalt Himself, but chose to become human, “emptying” Himself of it all. In living among us, Jesus did not seek privileges or honors. He lived a life marked by simplicity, always dedicating Himself to serving and teaching. By offering Himself as a sacrifice for us, Jesus not only showed the pinnacle of humility, but also taught us the true meaning of loving others. We are humble when we choose to put the needs of others above our own; to serve rather than be served. Following Jesus means embracing humility as a lifestyle, and not being so focused on improving my day-to-day life, but that of the people around us!
Take Action
This week, choose to do a task that you wouldn't normally do, such as cleaning a common space without anyone asking or knowing. Do it as an act of service, reflecting on Jesus' humility in serving others in silence.
