«Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘The feasts of the Lord, which you shall proclaim to be holy convocations, these are My feasts. » Leviticus 23: 2
Everybody likes parties, right? Did you know that Israel also had feasts? And more! They were established by God Himself! And they were more than just simple celebrations; they had deep meanings and taught important lessons to the people of Israel. Each feast marked special moments in the relationship between God and His people, reminding them of His protection, provision and promises.
Passover, for example, reminded the people of their deliverance from Egypt, marking the beginning of a new life free from slavery. Pentecost, celebrated fifty days after Easter, thanked God for the harvest and the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai. It was a feast of gratitude for all the blessings, including the laws that guided them.
The Feast of Tabernacles celebrated the people's journey through the wilderness, while they lived in tents, depending entirely on God's care. It was a time to remember God's provision and the promise of a promised land, a permanent home that God had prepared for them.
In short, these feasts were not only to look to the past, but also to the future, anticipating the coming of the Messiah and the final redemption of all God's people. They taught the people to trust in God, to celebrate His faithfulness and to live in community, sharing the blessings they had received.
