WHY DOES GOD ALLOW THE WILDERNESS EXPERIENCE?

«Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red sea, as the Lord spake unto me: and we compassed mount Seir many days.» Deuteronomy 2: 1

On the journey of life, God sometimes leads us down paths that seem to be long, difficult detours, much like a desert. Have you ever wondered why God allows these “wilderness” experiences? The story of the people of Israel wandering in the wilderness for 40 years before entering the Promised Land gives us some important clues.

The desert wasn't just a backwardness; it was a school. In this “crash course,” Israel learned to trust God for daily bread (manna), water from unlikely rocks and even protection from powerful enemies (often miraculously). God used the wilderness to mold the character of His people, teaching them dependence, obedience and faith.

The desert was also used to purify Israel. Difficulties and challenges removed from their midst those who doubted and resisted, preparing a generation that would enter the Promised Land with renewed faith and commitment to God.

Similarly, our personal “deserts” can be times of intense spiritual growth. They teach us to trust God more than our own strength. They can also reveal areas of our lives that need purification and surrender. But make no mistake, for even though the desert may seem lonely and difficult, God promises to be with you, guiding and teaching you as you pass through it.

Take Action

Find a place with sand, such as a playground or beach. Write in the sand the problems you have faced. Say a prayer surrendering them to God. Then, sprinkle sand on top. Just as it was easy to “erase” from the sand, remember that God can “erase” them from your life, too. After all, nothing is impossible!
