DEBORAH’S SONG

«“Thus let all Your enemies perish, O Lord! But let those who love Him be like the sun when it comes out in full strength.” So the land had rest for forty years.» Judges 5: 31

Shortly after entering the promised land, unfortunately a good part of the people of Israel ended up for-getting God, so they suffered great afflictions. God began to call special people to guide and deliver his people. The names of these chosen ones were “judges.” Deborah, who was one of Israel’s great leaders, as well as a judge and even a prophetess, with Barak’s help prepared an army of about 10,000 soldiers to fight against Sisera, captain of the Canaanite army. She was Israel’s first female judge, and even though the enemy army was very powerful, the people of Israel won the battle.

After the victory, Deborah and Barak sang a song to thank God: “ Thus let all Your enemies perish, O Lord! But let those who love Him be like the sun when it comes out in full strength.” This song, known as “Deborah’s Song,” is a beautiful example of how we can express our gratitude and joy to God. Like Deborah, we too can celebrate the good things that happen in our lives, no matter how big or small. It could be a good grade in school, a new friend, or even a fun day out with the family. When we thank God for these things, we are singing our own song of gratitude.

Take Action

Create your own “Song of Gratitude.” Think of something you are grateful for this week. It can be some-thing simple, like a nice day or a fun game. Then write a short song or poem about it and present your song to your family or friends.
