«For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; and no razor shall come on his head: for the child shall be a Nazarite unto God from the womb: and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.» Judges 13: 5
Samson's birth was one of the most extraordinary births recorded in the Bible. Before he was even born, an angel of the Lord appeared to his parents, who could not have children, and announced that they would have a son. But this would be no ordinary boy. The angel gave specific instructions: from his mother's womb, Samson was to be a Nazarite, a man dedicated to God. This meant he would not cut his hair, drink wine or consume any grape products, nor touch dead bodies.
Samson's mission would be to begin to liberate Israel from the Philistines, who at that time ruled over the people. Even before his birth, it was clear that Samson would be used mightily by God. God had a purpose for his life. His birth, promised by an angel, and his life were a sign of God's presence and strength among His people, even in difficult times.
Today's story teaches us about God's sovereignty and how He can accomplish His plans through us. From his birth, Samson was set apart for a special purpose, and that reminds us that God has a unique plan for each of us. You're not in this world for nothing. God has something special for you. Like Samson, dedicate yourself to God from an early age. God will endow you with gifts and talents to accomplish His purposes!
Take Action
This week, take time to reflect on the purpose God has for you. Write down on a piece of paper how you think you can serve God and others, inspired by Samson's story. Keep this paper in a visible place to remind you of your mission.
