The Festival of Lights

«That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.» John 1:9

My list for Christmas: family, gifts, decorations, a full table, joy and, of course, the gift for Jesus. Do not forget that last item. It would be a big mistake to give gifts to everyone except the birthday boy. And remember that He does not need clothes, shoes, furniture, or real estate. Jesus likes to win hearts.

Among so many beautiful things about Christmas, there is another detail that cannot be missed: the lights! If we were to eliminate all symbols associated with Christmas and leave just one, my choice would be the lights. It could be the twinkling lights on the pine tree or the candles on the dining table. At Christmas, there has to be light. An American family took this seriously and even got into the Guinness Book for having the brightest house on the planet at Christmas time. The residence was decorated with 601,736 light bulbs, all properly synchronized. It was a beautiful thing to see! But the electricity bill must not have been so pleasant…

Today’s verse says that when Jesus was born, “the true light which gives light into the world” came into the world. In the darkest moment in history, when humanity was lost in its reveries and despair, Christ came to chase away the darkness caused by sin. At the midnight of existence, in a stable in Bethlehem, the Light of the world was born.

It does not matter the date and condition we find ourselves in now. This Christmas, give yourself a gift: let the light of Jesus enter your heart. If this happens, your life will have real meaning and, best of all, one day you will be in Heaven, next to Jesus, for all eternity. There will be an “endless Christmas,” because Christ will be our eternal “light” (Rev 21:23).
