«I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.» Psalm 32:8
Certainly, you have asked yourself: “What is God’s will for my life?” At certain moments in our existence, we fall in love very easily. It is up to one love a week. If you have been through this period, you may have randomly opened the Bible and pointed your finger at a verse, trying to find out if it was God’s will. Another important decision you will have to make in the coming years has to do with your vocation. Have you ever asked God for a sign? Do you want divine approval?
God wants you to choose to serve Him, but He will not interfere with the most important decisions in your life. About tomorrow, you can only know your spiritual position and your eternal destiny. Nothing more. So, how does God reveal His will to us?
There are some filters to know how to discern God’s will. The first one is identifying God’s voice. Is this what God really wants? You will need to be intimate with the Lord to not confuse His will with yours.
Second, you will need to use the filter of Scripture. Is it biblical? God will not tell you anything that is contrary to His Word. Messages that contradict the Bible do not come from God. Once, I after I finished preaching, a young woman asked me: “Pastor, pray for me!” So, I asked her, “What do you want me to pray for?.” “My relationship. I am afraid my church will find out…”, she answered. Of course, I knew there was something more. Her boyfriend was not a church member, and she wanted God’s approval for something He had already said no to.
Third, put it through the wisdom test. Is it wise? God will never ask you to do something inconsistent and wrong. Fourth, analyze the configuration. “Does this attitude have to do with the way I am?” God will rarely ask for something that is different from your personality. God created you and gave you talents. He will not ask you to do something you do not have the talent to do.
Fifth, use the advice test. What do people who know and love you say? What do your father and mother say? And your friends? What do people who know you well say? They may be God’s answer to your concerns.
Finally, I must ask you to fill your mind with the Bible. God uses His Word to speak to us. The more time you spend with the Bible, the more sensitive your ear will be to God’s voice.
