It Became a Meme

«You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you.» Psalm 69:19

Learning to deal with humiliation is not as simple as it seems. No one wants to be embarrassed. Nor want to be recognized for something negative and become a laughingstock. We live in the age of memes. People's mistakes are shared on social media and can simply go viral.

The term “meme” is a relatively new noun. It designates an image, video or any action linked to humor that goes viral on the internet. Victims of memes tend to become famous. However, not everyone is emotionally prepared to become an online celebrity, especially if the reason for their fame is mockery or ridicule.

In general, derogatory memes are the current way of giving vent to the disrespect for others online that predominates in our days. Meme culture comes in the wake of the lack of limits that some imagine reigns in the web universe. In the name of false anonymity, many people give vent to their lowest and most sinful instincts. The result is total disregard for others.

Memes are only one more thing in a series of negative practices that spread on social media. These include crimes such as publishing intimate photos of other people and sharing confidential conversations, which are, unfortunately, common in these times of complete egocentrism, hedonism and hatred. God’s children should never participate in anything like this.

Not making content like this is not enough. We should not see, much less share, these things. Love, respect, altruism and solidarity must characterize all the actions of Christians.

In today's Bible verse, we find the psalmist as a victim of mockery and evil. The “memes” of his time were going viral against him. Faced with this situation, he decided to hand everything over to God. David learned not to waste time or give importance to these things. This is a good example for those who have suffered in meme culture. Placing your life in God's hands is also the recipe for not becoming an agent of evil and lack of consideration. Do not post evil on the timeline of your life. Only post what is good and morally acceptable. Do not let evil go viral. Share love. Follow Jesus. Heaven will “like” you.
