«But our God is in heaven; he does whatever He pleases.» Psalm 115:3
One of the most difficult issues to understand in the Bible is God’s will. We often say: “God wanted it this way. It was God’s will.” But we do not always know what that really means. We do not know everything about God either. We know just enough through His revelation in His Word, but there is infinitely more to discover! In fact, how could finite beings understand that which is Infinite?
According to the Bible, one of the fundamental aspects of God’s will is that it is absolute. God is sovereign. He rules the Universe. Everything belongs to Him. “The earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness, the world and those who dwell therein” (Ps 24:1). Because he owns everything, God is able to do what he wants and when he wants to do it.
God’s sovereign will can intervene in the Universe, in our world and in our lives at any time.
With the exception of prophetic revelation, God’s will cannot be anticipated: we only understand it after it has been accomplished. It is logical that, when it comes to free human beings, not everything that happens is the result of God’s will. Much of what we go through, and suffer from, comes from our own choices, good and bad, or even the choices of other people. However, God still acts, performs deliverances, miracles, and allows, or does not allow certain things to occur in our lives. With a wisdom unattainable to us mortals, He acts to guide things.
God is never taken by surprise. This absolute dimension of God’s will reveals His control of the situation. He is Omnipotent: there is nothing he cannot do. He is Omniscient: there is nothing He does not know. He is Omnipresent: there is no place in which He is not. And most importantly – He is love: there is no one He cannot love and save! Therefore, if something bad happens in your life, and you wonder about God’s will, choose to trust! If there is anything beyond your reach, let God be God. Make room for the Lord to lead you because He knows what is best for you.
Nothing can stop God; but astonishingly, we can reject His love. We can deny that salvation comes from Him. However, this does not diminish the Eternal One. In light of this, now open your heart to Him. Allow Him to guide you and allow His will to be done in your life.
