«Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left.» Isaiah 30:21
If I had to sum up life in one sentence, I think it would be: “To live is to choose.” We are always making choices. Not a single day will pass in our lives without us having to make decisions.
Some are simple and happen everyday; others are complex, demand reflection and have eternal implications. Certain consequences of our choices are immediate; others can only be perceived in the long term. One thing is certain: choices have the potential to impact our lives.
I have realized that, in life, the most difficult thing is not choosing between right and wrong. In general, these things are at opposite poles, and it's easy to know where to go. However, when we are between two right choices, it becomes difficult to make a decision. It seems that suddenly we come to a crossroads and ask, “Lord, what should I do?”
This is because life is not as simple as some think. Two good possibilities are not the same nor do they result in the same things. When two paths have positive endings and are ethically correct, we must ask for divine wisdom, use free will, be satisfied with the decision made and be prepared for the consequences.
However, between right and wrong, there will always be a clear “thus says the Lord.” His promise to us is: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. Do not be like the horse or like the mule, which have no understanding, which must be harnessed with bit and bridle, else they will not come near you” (Ps 32:8, 9).
God wants to guide us so that we are able to make the best choices, but we do not always seek guidance from Him. We prefer to act like irrational people who, to obey, need a halter. So don't be stubborn!
Each morning, as you begin a new day, consult the Lord about the best path. Don't take shortcuts or the usual route. Remember that God does not promise specific answers. He guarantees guidance, points to the right path and says: “There are two roads to travel, two masters and two destinations to follow. Now choose.” If you want to make the best decisions today, listen to the sweet, insistent voice of the Spirit saying, “Son, this is the way!”
