Pet Sin

«Come, and let us return to the Lord; for He has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He will bind us up.» Hosea 6:1

Can a pet sin exist? It seems strange, but it exists. It should not be common, but unfortunately many people like to “pet” their own mistakes. It is possible to domesticate sin and keep it close just like we do with pets. “Domesticated” sins are those that have the most power to destroy us. Those considered scandalous sins, which land people behind bars, repulse most people, we have a natural tendency to move away from them. But the most common sins in our day are the most dangerous and deadly. Lying, pornography, skepticism, masturbation, virtual betrayal or unbelief are, in fact, “fierce sins” that have the power to adapt and appear harmless but are lethal.

An example of this is what was seen by the medical team at a hospital in Jinan, China. Doctors were astonished when they came across the case of Duorijie, who was 76 years old. This man’s body managed to adapt and live with a ten-centimeter knife lodged in his brain for about 26 years. A thief robbed him and wounded him heavily in the head. Because of the depth to which the blade was lodged in Duorijie’s skull, the doctors did not dare to attempt to remove it, but, the more time passed, the higher the risk for this man. There was a deadly enemy inside him. Although it was a delicate procedure, surgery was the only way to save him.

Ingrained in the human mind, sin cuts our connection with God and disconnects us from the Source of life. Only the heavenly Surgeon can solve this problem. We cannot think that it is normal or even pleasant to live with something that kills us. In Hosea 6:1, there is an invitation for the sinner to turn to God, even if it results in some suffering. Often, the Lord allows life’s difficulties to come upon us to help us realize the evilness of sin.

Those who have a pet usually become attached to them. But sin is not a harmless puppy. It is a terrible monster that disguises itself to deceive us. Whoever gets used to a sinful practice and starts to love it will end up devoured by it. God’s plan involves the condemnation of sin and the deliverance of the repentant sinner. Do not play games with the enemy. Escape from evil and receive the liberation that only God can offer.
