A Life with Purpose

«Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?» Matthew 6:25

Living is an art that requires wisdom. Every second that passes is a brick that we build in our own existence. How is the construction of your “house” going? What choices, relationships and lifestyle have you used in this process? Remember that life has no rehearsal. The way we build the present determines the legacy we leave for the future.

When we look at life in its full dimension, we discover curious things. For example, did you know that people who eat meat can consume up to 7,000 animals throughout their lives? What types of foods have you been eating? Did you know that anyone who reaches the age of seventy has, under normal conditions, walked enough to travel around planet Earth almost five times? What paths have you been taking? Did you know that the amount of saliva a person produces in a lifetime is capable of filling two entire swimming pools? What kind of words usually come out of your mouth? Did you know that a person spends, on average, around six years of their existence dreaming? What thoughts do you have during the day that turn into dreams?

Life passes quickly, and we need to reflect on its developments. What have you been running after? Clothes? Money? Food? What is essential for you? In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus warned us about a futile, purposeless existence of people who live only to eat, drink, and wear.

God expects much more from us. Life is much more important than the brand of our clothes or the taste of our food. Instead of spending your time and resources on these things, invest in knowledge and serving others. Write a book, do a mission trip in another city, buy food baskets for those in need, publish messages of hope on the internet. There is so much we can do if we just organize our priorities better!

Among so many noble purposes, we cannot forget the main one: seeking the kingdom of God first. If we do this, all the other “bricks” will be added, and we will have a beautiful “house” to shelter those who have already lost the meaning of life.
