The Last Day

«This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.» John 6:39

Have you ever been last in line, last on roll call, or last in sports? Have you ever had the experience of coming in last place? It is not always bad to be last. If your name starts with the letter Z, for example, you have certainly had more time to prepare for an oral exam if the teacher respected the alphabetical sequence.

The last one is who closes the door, turns off the lights and puts an end to the story. The last person sees things that the first person in line does not see. The last seat on a bus can be the quietest. The last chapter of a book tends to be the most special, as it reveals the outcome of the story. And the last day of the year? It always brings hope of better times.

What kind of experiences could you describe today? Regardless of what happened during this year, know that the last day could be the most spectacular of your life, depending on how you build it. Take a moment to thank God and people. You will see that there are more reasons for joy than for sadness. Also reflect on some aspects that you can improve for the next year. This way, the last day of the year will not be the end of a story, but the beginning of a journey!

If you still have doubts that the “last” is not so bad, remember the words of Jesus written in the last chapter of the Bible: “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (Rev 22:13). Jesus is both the Alpha (first letter of the Greek alphabet) and the Omega (last letter). He knows the end from the beginning. The last word is always His. He is the Amen, the One who opens and closes the door of grace. Very soon, He will appear in the clouds, on the “last day,” to put an end to our pain and sadness. The last chapter of the Bible is, in fact, an open door to eternity.

If life has made you last in line, the “omega” on the list of important people, remember that Jesus specializes in making the last first. He will make sure to place you among the guests of honor at the party. Wait just a little longer. The last day is right there!
