«If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally […] and it will be given to him. But let him ask in faith […] for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.» James 1:5-6
We live in the information age. Through radio stations, satellite and cable TV channels and the internet, we are bombarded with more data than we can process. An infinite amount of data is available at the click of a button. However, this cannot be confused with wisdom. Wisdom can't be found that easily.
For many people, wisdom is synonymous with knowledge, which can be acquired through books, media and search engines. But knowledge is just analyzed and processed information. Wisdom is more than that: it is the practical application of knowledge in harmony with God's will.
According to Proverbs 2:5, wisdom is finding “the knowledge of God.” The greatest discovery in life is the certainty that God is the most important person for us. The first nine chapters of Proverbs present the central message of the book, which can be summarized in the phrase: wisdom is more precious than silver and gold. Imagine someone tells you, “I’ll give you anything you want. Do you want me to pay your bills? Give me your bank details. Do you want a new car? Choose the brand. Do you want a new home? Choose the place. The other option is wisdom. What do you choose?”
A young man who fears the Lord would choose wisdom. Even those who believe that their knowledge is the result of their own ability are only what they are because of God (Isa 28:29). The Spirit of God is the Spirit of “wisdom and understanding, [it is] the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord” (Isa 11:2). Make no mistake: true wisdom is a gift from God. You have to look for it. You need to invest time in this.
The deeper we feel our need and seek the Lord with a sincere heart, the more fully He will bestow His blessing upon us. Pray for wisdom. It is the most precious asset you can have. When you find it, you will have a treasure for a lifetime.
