Lord of the Seas

«And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased.» Matthew 14:32

After the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fish, the disciples embarked towards Capernaum. The trip would not be long, as the distance was approximately six kilometers.

However, the weather shifted, and a massive storm hit, which changed their intended course. Strong waves hit the boat, making the disciples’ work difficult.

In the latter part of the night, “Jesus went to them, walking on the sea” (Matt. 14:25). In the midst of the vigorous waves, Christ walked calmly. The thunder and lightning did not cause Him fear but served as light and sound for the spectacle of the Lord of the seas. For the Messiah, this was not a storm; it was a kind of triumphal entry.

But why did Christ help His friends only “just before dawn”? Sometimes it seems like Jesus takes a long time to solve our problems, doesn’t it? However, “God’s purposes know no haste and no delay” (Ellen G. White, The Desire of Ages, p. 32). He does everything at the right time and at the exact moment. Throughout that night, Christ did not lose sight of His friends.

When the disciples saw their Master approaching, they did not recognize Him, but thought he was a ghost. It is likely that belief in ghosts was common in that culture, and this superstition infected the disciples. But Jesus threw the folklore down the drain by saying: “Be of good cheer! It is I; do not be afraid” (v. 27).

Peter immediately asked Jesus to allow him to come to Him. However, when he noticed the strength of the wind, he began to sink. All that was left for the fragile disciple was to cry out for help: “Lord, save me!” (v. 30). Fortunately, the greatest Lifeguard in the world was by his side and rescued him from the waves of disbelief. They both returned to the boat and, as they entered it, the wind stopped.

That night, Christ had to calm two storms: one in the Sea of Galilee and another in the hearts of the disciples, who wanted to force Him to become King. The Creator then came, walking the waters, thus demonstrating that He was above all problems and had control of each situation.

Do not be afraid when the sea of difficulties looms before you. Look to Jesus, and you can walk on water.
