Less-known Women of the Bible

Mary, the Mother of James

One of the women who watched the crucifixion of Jesus from a distance (Matt. 27:55, 56) and who went to the tomb with Mary Magdalene to anoint Jesus, only to discover that the tomb was empty (Mark 16:1: Luke 24:1-12). She and others tried to tell the apostles what they had seen. Very little is said about this woman directly, but we know of her loyalty to Jesus, her certain sadness in approaching the tomb, and her joy in trying to explain to the disciples what she saw there. A woman’s life is summed up best, not by how much is said of her, but of what is said. Mary, the mother of James, was there when Jesus and she was there when He arose, which cannot be said of many others.
