Boldness
“So Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, took it; and he gave him Achsah his daughter as wife. Now it was so, when she came to him, that she persuaded him to ask her father for a field. So she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, ‘What do you wish?’ She answered, ‘Give me a blessing; since you have given me land in the South, give me also springs of water.’ So he gave her the upper springs and the lower springs” (Josh. 15:17-19).
Caleb provides Achsah with a field, but it is located in the dry, southern area of Judea. In order to be useful, the field needs irrigation water. Perhaps Caleb wants his daughter to realize she needs him to solve her need, just as Jesus would later counsel His followers, “Your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him” (Matt. 6:8).
Achsah comes “boldy to the throne of grace” (Heb. 4:16), because she needs a blessing. Caleb gladly gives her a life-giving spring of water, then he doubles her portion. God wants to shower us with a double-portioned blessing, a hope, and a future (Jer. 29:11), and promises to provide it when we boldly ask (Matt. 7:7).
