Christ's Radical Assertions Testify of His Divinity

Jesus Christ’s claims were so profound that there are only two possibilities: Either He was who He said He is—namely, God—or He was a lunatic, a mad man, a deceiver. Let us enumerate some of them which solemnly proclaimed that He is God: “You believe in God; believe also in me” (John 14:1, NIV); “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (Mark 8:34); “I am the resurrection and life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die” (John 11:25); “The Father judges no one, but has entrusted all judgment to the Son” (5:22); “I am the bread of life” (6:35); “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever” (6:51); “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness” (8:12); “This is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day” (6:39); “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (14:6); “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father” (14:9); “That all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father, who sent him” (5:23); “For I have come down from heaven” (6:38); “I and the Father are one” (10:30); “Before Abraham was born, I am!” (8:58). The Jews wanted to stone Him for this blasphemy (8:59). In addition, Jesus claimed to have power to forgive sins (Luke 5:24), and He accepted adoration when people worshipped Him (John 9:38). He called His disciples to follow Him (Matt 4:19; 8:22; 9:9; 10:38; 16:24) and declared, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matt 11:28).

The whole picture is crystal clear. Jesus Christ is God: He is our Creator (John 1:1–3; Col 1:16), Savior (John 12:32; Acts 4:12), Judge (John 5:24–30), Intercessor (Rom 8:34; Heb 7:25), King (Matt 25:34; Rev 17:14), Lord (John 13:13–14), and Friend (John 15:14).
