How Can I Know That Heaven Exists?
In a broken world that robs us of peace, joy, and loved ones, the concept of heaven brings comfort and hope. But how can we know that the promise of heaven—and ultimate healing—is more than just a wishful fantasy?
- The Bible’s testimony. The Bible’s many authors speak with one voice: The God who created us will not leave us shattered and torn, but will restore our bodies and our world to their original perfect design. Jesus’ disciple John wrote, “Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth has passed away” (Rev. 21:1). Jesus will return for us, take us home, and recreate our world.
- Eyewitnesses. If Jesus had simply stayed dead, His disciples would not have devoted their whole lives to claiming He had come back to life. The disciple Peter testified, “For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty” (2 Pet. 1:16, NRSV). The disciples preached with boldness because they knew Jesus—and the power of His resurrection (Phil. 3:10). They had wept at His death—and were transformed by His resurrection.
- Jesus’ promise. Jesus assures us, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am” (John 14:1-3, NIV).
