What Is the Relationship between Ellen White and the Bible?
Perhaps we should begin by clearing some misconceptions. The writings of Ellen White are not an addition to the Bible, or to in any sense take the place of the Bible. The Bible stands alone as the standard by which all other writings must be judged.
Ellen White did not want people using her as the final authority. Instead, she wanted to turn people’s attention to the Bible. She did this in two ways. First, she continually encouraged her readers to study the Bible for themselves. She tried in her writings to provide the ‘taste test’ to get people enthusiastic about beginning serious Bible study. Second, she regularly applied biblical principles in all her counsel to others. She sought to model how relevant the Bible is in all times and places. She was, as she put it, “a lesser light to lead men and women to the greater light” (Colporteur Ministry, p. 125).
This means that Ellen White’s writings are relevant to issues and topics today. At the same time, while it is wise to read her writings for counsel, it is important to keep the Bible center stage. This does not mean that we don’t need Ellen White’s writings, or that we can pick and choose what we want from them. Since Ellen White was inspired by the same Holy Spirit who inspired the Bible prophets, we need to take God’s messages from her seriously. While Ellen White’s writings are not equal to the Bible, they still speak to us today.
