Who Are the Angels?

Angels?

Really!

Are they in the same category as leprechauns, fairies, and pixies?

Actually, no. Maybe people fabricate all of those fictions because we sense that we are not alone in the universe. The Bible confirms that we are not alone in the cosmos. We live in an inhabited universe. In addition to us human beings, Scripture describes another order of beings called “angels.” They are as real as we are. They are super intelligent, highly emotional, and incredibly beautiful. And those which have continued to follow God like to help us however they can.

So what do we know about the angels? A lot, actually. Here are ten fascinating biblical insights regarding angels:

  1. The angels “sang together” when God created planet Earth and the human race, which means that they existed before God made us (Job 38:4-7).
  2. An angel named “Lucifer,” who once occupied a high position in God’s governmental structure, misused his freedom. He rebelled against God, misrepresented God’s character, and lead about one third of the angels to wage war against God (Isa. 14:12-14; Ezek. 28:11-19; Rev. 12:3-12).
  3. The angels are a very large population group. There is “an innumerable company of angels” (Heb. 12:22). Millions of angels surround the throne of God, standing ready to execute missions of mercy on behalf of God for human beings (Dan. 7:9-10; Ezek. 1).
  4. Angels travel back and forth between heaven and earth on ministry ventures (John 1:51; Heb. 1:14).
  5. Angels are sent to answer our prayers (Dan. 10:12).
  6. Sometimes good angels appear in human form and interact with us (Heb. 13:2).
  7. Both children and adults have guardian angels (Matt. 18:10; Ps. 91:11).
  8. The angels are asexual and do not marry (Matt. 22:30).
  9. Angels are involved in holding back world affairs from spinning out of control (Rev. 7:1-4).
  10. And, finally, angels are looking with curiosity and interest into the mystery of God’s love for us and how He saves us by His grace (1 Pet. 1:12).
